The Gawain Project

I’m excited to present my new annotated translation and facsimile of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a late fourteenth-century chivalric romance. I recommend beginning with my short prefatory essays, which offer brief context for the poem, my translation, and my Middle English reproduction. You are, however, welcome to jump right into the poem, which I have separated into the four common fitts (chapters). The translation and reproduction are presented side-by-side with annotations marked only in the translation. To view the annotations, either hover over the superscript or click on the superscript link to see the footnote (and click the footnote’s corresponding number to return to your place in the poem).

The poem is designed to be read using laptop or desktop screens. Your reading experience will be severely hampered on mobile devices and smaller screens.
