The standard and preferred spelling has always been bury the lead, but in the newspaper business, bury the lede has become a kind of journalistic cant, so spelled to supposedly avoid mispronouncing lead as led. While unusual enough to readers that it should be avoided or placed in quotes to indicate as jargon, the nonstandard spelling has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity almost to the point of rivaling the standard expression. Nonetheless, prefer the standard spelling, which has existed for decades longer and remains more popular.
