Where compose means to constitute or make up a whole, comprise means to be made up of or consist of. Thus their proper uses: parts compose the whole, the whole comprises the parts; parts are comprised in the whole, the whole is composed of the parts. Be not a careless writer who reverses these words’ meanings.
