Digitize originally meant to finger or handle, from Latin digitus (finger or toe). This sense has been all but lost since its modern definition—to convert into digital format—entered our lexicon. Digitalize originally and still means to administer digitalis, a chemical derived from the digitalis plants. Do not misuse digitalize as a redundant synonym of digitize: digitalize still has a distinct, specialized meaning of its own, and digitize already covers the technological sense just fine.
