E.g. or I.e.

E.g., the abbreviation for exempli gratia (for example) should be reserved for examples. I.e., the abbreviation for id est (that is) should be reserved for clarifications. Do not confuse the two abbreviations. Thus Literary novels (e.g., The Great Gatsby) are among my favorites and The pale blue dot (i.e., earth) is our home. Both abbreviations precede a comma.
