Envy or Jealousy

While jealousy should be restricted to emotional and sexual resentment (especially of a rival), envy applies more generally to resentment of a luckier person, rival or not. The two words have enjoyed a more intertwined and complex etymological history than is shown here, but modern use prefers the simple, aforementioned distinctions.
