Lay of the land is standard in American English; lie of the land is standard in British English. However, as frequently seems to be the case, the American rendition has exploded in popularity in British English since the early 2000s and is now more common in writing even in British English. While the distinction still exists, lay of the land may be considered standard in all written English.
