Nimrod, son of Cush, was, according to Genesis 10:8–9, “a mighty hunter before the Lord.” But, in current usage, a nimrod is something of a nincompoop—an idiot. How that happened is unknown, though popular theory claims that, when Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny called Elmer Fudd a nimrod, American audiences missed the sarcasm and interpreted the insult literally. Whether or not that story is true doesn’t matter—it’s a good story, and nimrod has taken a far more negative connotation since the 1980s.
