Pay (to give due money): pay > paid > paid

Although the misspelling payed in place of paid appears with unfortunate frequency, payed is only ever correct when using pay in the nautical sense, meaning to seal the deck or hull seams of a wooden ship with pitch or tar so as to prevent leakage.
