The Latin per centum (per hundred) evolved into per cent., per cent, and eventually percent, which has been, since the 1940s, the American English standard. As far as I know, only The New Yorker has been resistant to the one-word version, preferring per cent, which is standard in British English (The New Yorker is staunchly American everywhere else).
