Pore Over

When it comes to studying something closely, such as data or maps or spelling, the proper idiom is to pore over. When it comes to covering ice cream with freshly-heated chocolate fudge, prefer pouring (the sauce) over the ice cream.

The verb pore (to study intently) is of unknown origin, though it predates the noun pore (small orifice) by about a century.
