In British English, theatre refers specifically to live performances (e.g., musicals and plays) and their venues, and cinema refers to movies and movie venues. In American English, theatre also refers to live performances and their venues but theater refers to movie venues (movie theaters). Although Bryan A. Garner considers theater the universal standard in American English, he would find himself hard-pressed to change the opinion of the country’s theatre crowd. For now, the distinction is prevalent enough to warrant saving.
