Although till is sometimes assumed to be less formal than until, the two words are equal as prepositions and conjunctions. Neither should be considered colloquial or inferior. Use the words carefully, however, as both can lead to ambiguous prose: I didn’t work until noon can either mean I stopped working before noon or I started working at noon. Rephrase such cases.
