The correct spelling of the Vienna sausage or, more commonly in America, a hot dog, is wiener. Yet Americans regularly misspell it as weiner, despite the popular adage “i before e except after c.” Given how many of them are (rather proudly) of German heritage, I can only assume that a lexical uninterest is to blame for this error. Do not excuse the poor spelling or pronunciation of foreign words and names on lazy ignorance.
